If you live with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA), you may have been told to "just live with it", or that surgery is the only option. The evidence says otherwise. Exercise and education are the recommended first-line treatments for hip and knee OA, and GLA:D® is one of the best-researched ways to deliver them. We are proud to offer GLA:D® at IntegratePHYSIO.
What is GLA:D®?
GLA:D® stands for Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark. It was developed by researchers in Denmark and is now delivered by trained physiotherapists around the world, including through GLA:D® Australia. The program teaches you about your joints and uses targeted exercise to improve how you control and move them in everyday life.
What the program involves
- An initial assessment to understand your symptoms and measure your current function
- Two education sessions on osteoarthritis, how exercise helps, and how to manage your symptoms day to day
- Twelve supervised group exercise sessions, twice a week for six weeks, focused on strength, balance and joint control
- Follow-up assessments so you can see your progress
Sessions are run in small groups by a GLA:D®-trained physiotherapist, so every exercise is tailored to your level. Many people enjoy the group setting; it is motivating and social.
What results can you expect?
Results from thousands of GLA:D® participants in Denmark show that, on average, pain reduced by around a quarter three months after starting the program, fewer people needed pain medication, and physical function and activity levels improved. Participants also report high levels of satisfaction twelve months on. Results vary from person to person, but most people finish with less pain and more confidence in their joints.
Who is it for?
GLA:D® is suitable for anyone with hip or knee joint symptoms that are troubling them, whether or not osteoarthritis has been confirmed on an X-ray. It can also be a great way to prepare your body if you are considering joint replacement surgery in the future.
