Exercise rehabilitation: how an Exercise Physiologist helps you recover

By Anh DinhOct 30, 2026 · 2 min read

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have for recovering from injury, managing chronic health conditions and staying independent as we age. But knowing what to do, how much, and how to progress safely can be hard on your own. That is where an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) comes in.

What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists are university-qualified allied health professionals who specialise in using exercise to prevent and manage injury and chronic disease. AEPs are accredited by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). We design programs that are safe and effective for people with medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.

Who can benefit?

  • People recovering from injury or surgery, such as knee, hip or shoulder replacements
  • People with ongoing back, neck or joint pain
  • People with osteoarthritis or osteoporosis
  • People living with diabetes, heart disease or other chronic conditions
  • People with neurological conditions, including spinal cord injury, stroke and Parkinson's disease
  • Women before and after pregnancy
  • Anyone wanting to return to work, sport or daily activities with confidence

What to expect

Your first session starts with an assessment of your health history, goals and current abilities, such as strength, balance, mobility and fitness. From there we build a personalised program that may include:

  • Strength training to rebuild muscle and support your joints
  • Balance and mobility work to reduce the risk of falls
  • Cardiovascular conditioning to improve fitness and heart health
  • Functional training that mirrors the tasks you need to do at home, at work or in sport
  • Education so you understand your condition and can keep exercising independently

Sessions can take place in our rehabilitation gym, in hydrotherapy, or as a home program. Because our Exercise Physiologists and physiotherapists work side by side, your rehab is coordinated from your first treatment through to your return to full activity.

Funding options

Exercise physiology may be covered by private health insurance extras, Medicare (with a GP chronic condition management plan), NDIS, DVA, WorkCover or CTP, depending on your situation. Our team can help you understand what you are eligible for.
